How did you get into wedding photography/ What is your background/ qualifications?

.

I’ve been taking photographs since I owned a plastic camera at five years old & I’ve always been intrigued by photography. At sixteen, I went to college where they insisted I take on an extra a-level subject and I chose photography. I was hooked straight away, and I knew it was what I wanted to do the minute I saw a black and white image appear in the developing chemicals. I then went on to do a degree in Photography, Video and Digital Imaging, and started working for a few companies. I’ve always known I wanted to own my own business also since I was five years old when I used to visit my parent’s shop, so everything just slotted together and things took off from there.

Why wedding photography specifically?

.

Wedding photography is so exciting at it allows you access to photograph someone’s very special day and capture all of the love and joy that comes with it. I love meeting people, and I’m a very smiley and positive person so photographing a wedding allows me to do all of that as well as use my passion and skill for photography.

What is your favourite thing about being a wedding photographer?

.

A wedding is a photographer’s dream! There are so many wonderful things to capture, the smiles, the laughs, the tears and the unexpected moments that present themselves. It’s great to meet so many new people and share in someone’s special day. It’s an honour really!

How do you get couples to relax on the day?

.

I just speak to them and be myself really. I meet my couples beforehand and find out a bit about them, and on the day, having a chat and a giggle with them means they are more relaxed. Most of my work is candid so they don’t even know I’ve taken the particular photographs until they see them afterwards anyway.

Any advice to any brides who don’t like to have their picture taken?

.

The most important thing is: make sure you’ve met your photographer before the day. Be confident in feeling you trust them and you feel they will capture you at your best. It’s always a great idea to book a pre-wedding shoot with your photographer to get some practice before the day and know what to expect.

What sort of makeup should a bride wear to look great in her pictures?

.

I’d recommend complimentary colours and a more natural style, to bring out your features rather than make you look like somebody else. Booking a professional make up artist who can also do a trial with you beforehand is great as well, so you are completely happy with your look. They know all the best make up that will last all day, even if you do have a couple of tears!

Anything to avoid which might look bad in the wedding pictures?

.

This may sound really small and is easily overlooked, but many photographers will photograph the bride’s dress hanging up before they put it on. It’s something that can be forgotten, but having it on a normal plastic coat hanger can spoil the photograph. Having a wooden one or a satin style one makes the whole shot look so much better. Really tiny detail I know!

If you were photographer at the Royal Wedding, what would be your "must have" shot?

.

My ‘must have’ shot would be the moment when Kate has walked down the aisle to William, and they first lay eyes on each other. This strips it back from being the ‘Royal Wedding’ with all the fuss of the day and the tourist attraction, and makes it capture a moment that is intimate and really about what the day is, confirming two people’s love for each other. Cheesy, I know!

Any memorable weddings that you have captured?

.

My old friend from college, Hannah got married to Sam in Gretna Green last January. They didn’t want any of the ‘touristy style’ shots and her day was just beautiful, a candlelit winter wedding. She went against tradition and wore a red dress, to match her husband’s military uniform, and it was just gorgeous. During Sam’s speech I had to wipe away a few tears as it was just the sweetest thing I’d ever heard. After the first dance had been underway for a minute or so, they both broke out into ‘air guitar’ playing and it was hilarious. There were a lot of great moments that day, and the individuality of the dress and the relaxed atmosphere really suited them.

Are you married?

.

Not yet! I’ve definitely met ‘the one’ (sorry to go all cliché) but no marriage plans yet.  As long as I’m in charge of choosing the photographer I’m sure we will have a very happy life together!

Any funny stories to share?

.

Not one in particular but something that happens at many weddings with lovely little children in attendance. When everything goes quiet and the vicar/registrar asks ‘if any person here present knows of any reason why these two people cannot be joined in marriage, speak now or forever hold your peace’ (or words to that effect) there’s always a little one who decides it’s a great moment to shout/babble something out and make everybody laugh and release the tension!

What sets you apart from other wedding photographers?

.

I’m friendly, approachable, and flexible. I can tailor my work and packages to fit each wedding’s individual needs. I’ve also a lot of experience of working with and photographing children (from my time as an action sports photographer for children’s events) and can speak to them on their level, make them laugh and get some great shots of them. If there’s something special I can do for a particular wedding, I will try to offer it – for example I’m photographing a vintage style wedding on a farm in June (watch out for it on Brides Up North) and as well as the digital shots I’m going to do some bride and groom shots later on with a 1950’s Rolliflex box camera. These pictures will be on 120mm film in square format. The couple really love old style photography. I was originally trained in film photography and have the equipment so thought we could do something different!

What can a couple who book you expect on the day?

.

They can expect me to be reliable, smiley, friendly and provide a personal service. They can also expect me to have learnt the names of the main wedding party and refer to people by name. We will have gone through some planning together beforehand so everything will run smoothly on the day. Most of the time they won’t even realise I’m snapping away.

.

.

What is included in your "package"?

.

All of my packages include a CD of high resolution retouched images, in a personalised case, with printing rights, this means the couple have a choice of what they want to do with them afterwards. Extras such as high quality coffee table albums can be added, I find that most people like to piece together their own package to suit their wedding.
