How did McBratney Magic begin? What is your background?
.
I moved to Yorkshire in 1986, my brother had become the proud owner of Mother Shipton’s Cave and the Petrifying Well (now there’s a magical place)! I initially came to help set up and develop the attraction, but sort of stayed. In addition to Mother Shipton’s Cave we created a company that advised and ran attractions all over the country and it was great fun. In 2001 the business was sold and I decided to do something completely different. Within the tourism and hospitality businesses we worked with entertainers and magicians. One who became a great friend, Brian Le Slie suggested that I would make a good magician and entertainer. I shrugged it off but then thought, why not! McBratney Magic and Bob’s your Uncle were launched in December 2001.

You are a member of the Magic Circle, what does that mean?
.
The Magic Circle is the most prestigious magic organisation in the world, it has less than 1500 members worldwide and has a strict vetting and rigorous selection procedure. Members of the Magic Circle are tested on the skills in the magical arts and their entertaining ability. Being a member of the Magic Circle is like a quality Kite Mark – you know you’re in safe hands – but you still might want to keep hold of your watch!

Why should a Bride book you for her wedding day?

You don’t need me to tell you this is a BIG day, and a skilled and personable magician can help make it a great and memorable day. There are several sections of the day where a great wedding magician and entertainer can be really useful:

After the ceremony before the wedding breakfast – this is an incredibly busy time for the Bride and Groom and the immediate wedding party, lots of formal photos to be taken and quite often video footage to be grabbed. Guests not directly involved are often left to their own devices, albeit with a glass fizz in their hands. This is a perfect time to use a close up magician to mix and mingle with the guests. Using stunning close up magic I can bring groups of people together to get the party started, the ideal icebreaker. The magic is strong and it’s happening right under your nose!

During the wedding breakfast is perfect for table magic, where I move from table to table performing two or three mini miracles using cards, money, napkins – in fact anything I can get my hands on!

Bobs your Uncle has a great deal of experience with young people, I have a young son and 19 nieces and nephews! Having some set entertainment for children at a wedding is a good thing, it adds some positive structure to the day for the children to look forward to. It also gives the parents some bargaining power – you know what I mean: “Hurry up and finish your food the magic show is starting soon”. The children’s show is fast paced and appropriate for the mixed age range that you get at weddings. There’s puppets, a real rabbit, lots of magic, music based party games and tons of audience participation.

Have you performed at many weddings?
.
Yes, I have, loads of happy Brides, Grooms and their guests. I enjoy performing at weddings a lot.

Which celebrity wedding would you like to perform at and why?
.
David Tennant and Georgia Moffett – Performing for the Doctor that would have to be the best treat ever.
It turns out that Georgia has time travel in her blood too, her father is Peter Davidson a former Doctor Who!

What magic tricks would you perform for the royal wedding?
.
Without a doubt “The Love Test” this is my advanced, magical compatibility test with an amazing twist at the end, they’d love it.

What is your best/favourite trick?
.
I have loads but I guess the one I’m most famous for is where I take someone’s signed banknote, make it disappear right in front of them, to find it later in some of the most implausible places – it blows people away, I’m very proud of it.

Any funny stories?
.
I was performing close up magic to a group of guests at a wedding recently, we were outside and I was aware that there was something going on some way behind me. My audience were looking at whatever was going on so I turned around, only to see a blurred object hurtling straight for me, yep, you guessed it, I caught the bouquet! I immediately re-launched it, and it was captured by someone much younger and prettier than me!
