How did Popcake Kitchen begin?
.
Helen’s sister in law is from America and has recently moved over to the UK. When being shown around the area she was enquiring as to where to buy ‘popcakes’. At this point there were confused looks all round until a ‘popcake’ was explained! Having looked on a few American sites, we saw a real gap in the market for these delicious treats over here in the UK and having a catering background, felt we could make fantastic popcakes for the North East.

What is your background?

We have all worked in hospitality for several years – Helen being a very successful catering manager, under whom Greg and Abby worked. Greg holds a degree in Automotive Design and Abby a degree in Graphic Design and so with their artistic flare and ability together with Helen’s extensive knowledge of the industry, we make the perfect Popcake Kitchen team.

Where is Popcake Kitchen based?

We are currently in the process of moving to new premises and are soon to be located in Catchgate, Co. Durham. We can hand deliver our pops in the areas around Newcastle and Durham (a small delivery charge may apply), and can post out our more sturdy designs.

What type of popcakes can you make?
.
We can make just about anything into a popcake! Our current repertoire includes elegant wedding favours, cute children’s animals (our recent Hello Kitties have been a massive hit) and yummy yet sophisticated chocolate delights. We are happy to work with any idea the client brings to us and love trying out new and innovative ideas. We have a delicious flavour range of Chocolate, Vanilla, Lemon, Strawberry and Toffee.

How long does a set of popcakes take to make?
.
This really depends on the intricacy of the popcake. We spend quite a lot of time perfecting our designs, but once we have them cracked we can have a batch of 100 knocked out in no time!

What celebrity’s wedding would you like to make popcakes for and why? What design and flavour would you choose?
.
Katie Perry and Russell Brand- I think this would have been really fun to do as they are quite a mad couple! We’d have probably come up with some new designs to fit around their Indian wedding, perhaps some tiger pops and lots of rich colours and patterns in our yummy chocolate flavour cake.

What sort of popcakes would you make for the Royal Wedding?
.
Definitely something sophisticated and classical. We could make a subtle strawberries and cream flavoured cake decorated with white chocolate with white piping over the top and a dusting of pearl to shimmer in the light – just gorgeous!

Have you made any really unusual popcakes?
.
We have actually just been asked to make a dead parrot! The idea is from the Monty Python sketch about the Norwegian Blue Parrot – it’s very funny, but could be a challenge.
