Today’s wedding showcases how both a bride and groom’s personality can be incorporated into a wedding day.
Keen to make sure that her husband-to-be felt a key part of the wedding preparations, bride Jenine decided to use one of her beau’s main interests as the wedding theme, resulting in a big day with clever superhero and comic book touches.
Given the elegant setting, Jenine then successfully blended these details with a pretty vintage colour palette and beautiful blooms for a wedding that had the best of both ‘him’ and ‘her’.
We particularly love Jenine’s lace detailed gown and also the maids’ cute tea-length dresses. What a pretty group of ladies they are!

Ryan proposed to me in Mexico on the 22nd April 2014. It was whilst we were swimming with dolphins. At the end of the swim the trainers asked us (me, Ryan my mom and my sister) if we would like to be shown how to make the dolphins do tricks. We obviously said yes. As Ryan had organised this I was supposed to do a specific trick, making the dolphin flip in the air. But the trainer got confused and asked my sister to do it as he thought Ryan was proposing to her. After she had done the trick they past her a cool box that they said had fish inside to feed the dolphin, she opened it and saw the ring. She quickly put the lid back on and handed me the box. Confused I opened the box and saw the ring laid on a leaf surrounded by exotic flowers. I looked up and Ryan asked the question. I said yes and started to cry.We set the date for 28th August 2015. Ever since I was young I always wanted to married on August bank holiday.
Our chosen venue was Losehill House Hotel & Spa, situated in The Peak District. We wanted an intimate venue that we could share with family and friends. When we went to view the hotel, it was the amazing surroundings sealed the deal.
The theme for the wedding was super heroes. Ryan is a major fan of Marvel and DC, as he’s a bit of a geek. As this is one of the many reason why I fell in love with him, I thought why not build it in to our big day to make it a bit quirky and something everyone would remember. I also thought that this would be a good way to make sure Ryan was fully involved with the planning.
We didn’t have a colour theme as such but I wanted whatever colours we did have to emit a vintage feel. We found the perfect bridesmaid dresses in pale blue. We then bought the boys pale blue bow ties to match and I bought some blue wedding shoes too!
When I started wedding dress shopping I had no idea what I wanted and I ended up trying on quite a few until I found the one. I finally choose a plain, ivory ballroom style dress, with a lace top and jewelled belt from Emily Bridal Wear in Sheffield. As soon as I had it on all together I just knew it was the one (I had to fight back the tears). My favourite part of the dress was the back as it had buttons all the way down.
Ryan chose to wear an electric blue Ted Baker suit with a gold bowtie and brown shoes. The suit was from Moss Bros in Sheffield. The groomsmen wore the same suit as Ryan but with light blue bowties.
The bridesmaids wore light blue, prom style dresses with gold lace overlays from Chi Chi Clothing.
James Shaw Photography captured our wedding day for us. I would definitely recommend James as he was awesome on the day, not only documenting every moment perfectly, but also helping out with small issues on the day. He knows exactly how to make everyone feel at ease so the photos look as natural as possible.
All our wedding flowers were supplied by Sarah’s Florist in Sheffield. She was fabulous as I changed my mind a few times about what I wanted.
I carried a mixed bouquet of flowers, which included roses and baby’s breath. During the ceremony we also had tiny baby’s breath arrangements hanging from the chairs and smaller versions of my bouquet in fish bowl vases on the windowsills of the venue. These were later moved on to the tables to form the centre pieces. The top table had a hessian banner that said “just married” on it we also had three jug vases in which my bouquet and the bridesmaids’ bouquets were placed during the meal.
As favours we gave Marvel and DC comics, depending on which table guests were sat at depended on which comic they received. The tables were all named after Marvel or DC superheroes and were designed on a comic strip canvas. Our wedding guest book was also designed as a comic book, along with the invites that we sent out to our guests.
Our wedding cake was based on the fortress of solitude from Superman so was just plain white icing made to look like ice. The groom figure of Ryan was designed to have his shirt open showing the superman outfit underneath. As another sweet treat we also had a chocolate fountain from Mirage Chocolate Fountains. It was delicious and really reasonably priced.
To keep our guests entertained we hired magician called The Inceptionist, who went around the room interacting with guests after the ceremony and then again at the night do. He was recommended by the venue and was absolutely awesome. We also had a bouncy castle outside for the children (and the adults) and a photo booth supplied by James Shaw Photography. Music wise we hired a DJ so we could play all different genres of music to keep the dancefloor full.
After our wedding I would definitely recommend Losehill to brides and grooms who are looking for an exclusive venue set within beautiful surroundings. It was perfect for us.
Looking back I would say that my favourite part of the day was walking down the aisle and seeing Ryan’s face. As soon as I saw him my whole body relaxed and a huge smile spread across my face. From that point on I didn’t stop laughing.
For our honeymoon we went to Thailand and Cambodia. It was a trip we had been wanting to take for about four years so was the perfect choice for our first holiday as husband and wife. We had an amazing time experiencing the culture and all of the amazing temples, waterfalls and shopping malls.
My top tip to other Brides Up North would be – you can’t make everybody happy, so don’t try to! Remember you are doing this for you, not for your family and friends so do what makes you happy. Our day was perfect, and if I had to do it again, I wouldn’t change a thing.
