Over to James Michelsberg:

.

So you’re getting married eh? Fabulous. I have no doubt, like mine, it will be one of the happiest days of your life. But be warned – the preparations can all get rather full on. Most blokes are happy to take a back seat, and apart from spending a few Sundays tucked away in the corner of a draughty church, or, shuffling round a wedding fair, your role will probably be largely supportive.

.

Welcome my friend to a world of bridal magazines, swatches of fabrics, chocolate fountains, colour schemes, and negotiating the minefield that is second only to attending a G8 summit, when you sit down together to discuss “The Guest List.”

.

As Vinnie said in ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’ it could get ‘emotional,’ but I promise, as you make those vows to each other in front of your nearest and dearest, it will be worth it.

.

As a bespoke tailor who truly has your best interests at heart, you must faithfully promise me one thing. Don’t hire your wedding clobber. Please. Don’t. This is a day when you owe it to yourself to find the living god within and be, without question, the best dressed man in the room.

.

A wedding day is stressful and the suit you wear is in many ways your armour. Get it right and you’ll feel two inches taller, cruising down the aisle in a cloud of confidence, secure in the knowledge you look and feel absolutely awesome. As the wedding car pulls up outside, you want to be able to look in the mirror, straighten your tie and say, this is my wedding day, and I’m going to own it.

How can a chap expect to feel comfortable with sleeves hanging over his knuckles, crotch round the knees, waddling around like an emperor penguin with rickets?

.

So, what to wear?

.

Well, that depends on you and most importantly what you feel comfortable in.

.

Many of our customers want a lounge suit – something razor sharp and very fitted, often single-breasted with slim, or peak lapels and a bright silk lining that is often a nod to the colour scheme of the day. In my opinion, navy blue and charcoal grey are the most elegant colours and black is without doubt their cool cousin. Waistcoats are rather dapper, give you a reassuring hug and mean you’ll still look smart when the jacket comes off after the speeches.

.

Mohair and finer cloths are particularly popular as they have a wonderful sheen and lustre that is great for a swanky occasion, although we’ve used modern tweeds complete with velvet collars for more eccentric customers who wanted to achieve the Lord of the Manor look.

.

Simple, understated, luxurious cloths are usually the order of the day as jazzy numbers can be a bit full on, and are more difficult to match if the rest of the wedding party are buying off the peg. If you are buying ready-to wear, then the fit across the shoulders and chest is the number one priority.

.

If it’s a traditional church wedding, a morning suit can look very elegant but you do have to be quite tall to pull it off. I love double-breasted waistcoats in dove grey, and think they look far more sophisticated when worn with a tie, rather than cravat.

The right shoes, as I’m sure you’ll agree are vital. Like the suit, you can wear them again after the wedding, so invest in a decent pair, with leather soles. Black with laces are more in keeping for more formal weddings and Church, or, Grenson do a mean pair. For something cool and more laid back, try Paul Smith, Oliver Sweeney, or my personal favourite, Jeffery West – simply gorgeous.

.

In my opinion, getting the right look is keeping it simple and focusing on the details – accessories are everything and lovely cufflinks, a pearl stickpin, and simple pocket hanky will raise the outfit to a different level.

.

When I sit down with my customers, we talk, and it’s my job to get on their level. I get a feel for their personalities and suggest ideas that fit. Between us we come up with something special ranging from the under-stated to the simply outrageous. The most important thing on the day is that you feel comfortable with what you are wearing.

.

Good luck!

.

.

Wise, wise words! Pass them on…
