How did Heaven Sent Cupcakes begin?
.
I had always had a passion for baking, I can remember baking with my Nanna from a very early age, we used to make cakes crumbles, scones, savoury pies & much more, the good old fashioned traditional stuff… mmm! As I grew up and moved into my own home I would love to bake delicious treats for my family especially for special occasions and I always received great comments saying I should sell my cakes.

It was only in 2008 when my step-daughter turned 8 and wanted cupcakes for her birthday and the comments from mothers of the children at her party made me realise that I had something special and could make a go of it… and so Heaven Sent was created and it has gone from strength to strength.

What is your background?
.
I am completely self taught, I don’t have any formal qualifications. My passion for creating delicious cakes and treats and my natural artistic flair has provided me with the talent to create bespoke designs to a very high standard. There are a few techniques I would love to try and I am hoping to have a little trip down to London to a fantastic bakery to learn some new tricks.

Where is Heaven Sent Cupcakes based?

We are based in Chester le Street (County Durham) and I currently run the bakery from my own home. We are looking to open a shop in the near future – we have a vision of a shabby chic cake shop were customers can drop in for a coffee and a cake in a lovely relaxed atmosphere, they can buy cakes to take away, order treats for special occasions or come along for a cake consultation. We also hope to be able to hire out the venue for small functions, serving afternoon tea etc.

What type of cupcakes can you make?

We not only create cupcakes, but also large cakes, cookies, sweet treats and candy buffets. We have a vast array of flavours including, rich chocolate, luscious lemon, delicate vanilla, Oreo, summer fruits and much more. All of our cakes are individually hand crafted and bespoke to customers’ requirements. We specialise in novelty cakes and cupcakes, as well as producing divine traditional wedding cakes.

Which is your favourite cupcake design of all time?

Our most popular design of cupcakes is our Girly & Gorgeous range, which is by far our best seller. A personal favourite flavour of mine has to be coconut, they are so moreish!

Are cupcakes a good idea for hen parties too?
.
Cupcakes are a fantastic idea for Hen & Stag parties alike, it isn’t just girls that like cakes! chocolate cake is always a winner with the men. We produce cupcakes in many different designs and flavours, we have even been known to come up with some quite kinky cupcakes, which always go down a treat!

What sort of cupcakes would you make for the Royal Wedding?
.
I think I would go down a more traditional route for William & Kate with a tiered cake of rich fruit, delicate vanilla, luscious lemon and of course rich chocolate, decorated in ivory royal icing with intricate piped designs, adorned with accents of pearls and diamonds and topped with flowers to match Kate’s bouquet. I would also include iced cookie favours for all of the guests, with handcrafted crests to match their design.

Have you made any really unusual cupcakes?
.
I have made some pretty unusual cakes and cupcakes including a ramblers themed cake, car logo cupcakes, a tall ship cake and I have a wedding coming up with an allotment themed cake and cupcakes!

How far in advance should Brides Up North place their order?
.
For weddings we ideally ask for 3 months notice, however we are taking bookings up to 2013, so its best to get in quick. Heaven Sent offer a professional personalised service for all of our customers, with a free consultation and taster samples to help you design your perfect cake.

Can you give Brides Up North an idea on price?

All of our cakes are individually priced, however we do not believe in charging more for wedding cakes than we do for other cakes. We pride ourselves on perfection and believe that no matter what occasion we produce a cake for it should not only look fabulous but taste delicious.
