Happy Friday Brides Up North!  We are over in Altrincham today making all sorts of plans for our Brides Up North Luxury & Vintage Wedding Exhibition at The Bowdon Rooms, but here on the pages of the wedding blog we are across in East Yorkshire.

.

Those of you in the region might recognise today’s bride Leanne, as she is a TV reporter and presenter for BBC Look North ( East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire) but currently working at the BBC’s new media city in Manchester, returning to Look North screens in May.

Leanne says: Unfortunately we don’t have an amazing engagement story to tell! We were at home in Hull, I was sitting at my dressing table brushing my hair and Richard just came and sat next to me and asked me to marry him. Just a few moments before he’d been looking at engagement rings on the internet and decided to just come and ask me instead! He then made me a seafood risotto and we sat outside in the garden and ate our tea with a bottle of champagne.

.

A more of a romantic story is how we got together. We first dated around ten years ago but split up due to distance as Richard got a job in Newcastle. Then in 2011 we met up for a coffee in Beverley and the next day Richard asked me if I wanted to go to Rome for a weekend, and it all started from there. Within a year we were living together and six months after that we were engaged.

We got married on 16th March 2013 at Burton Agnes Church followed by a reception next door at Burton Agnes Hall, one of the UK’s finest stately homes. When we got engaged we had no firm ideas on what we wanted but we did want a church wedding and we stumbled upon Burton Agnes Church by chance. On the way back from a trip to Bridlington we drove past Burton Agnes and a sign which said 13th Century Church, we have always loved the hall and have been there many times in the past but never noticed the little church next door as it’s surrounded by trees. We walked down the little pathway, opened the door and fell in love with it immediately. It had a warm and cosy feel and the vicar ( Rev James Anderson) made us feel so welcome and at home. We instantly knew that was where we wanted to get married and didn’t look at anything else after that.

.

The colour scheme was dusky pink and sage green – with a vintage rose feel throughout to match the roses on my dress!

Helen Guy, a make up artist from Bridlington helped me to get ready,  My dad booked her as a surprise as I was going to do my own hair and make up. I’m so glad he did, it meant all I had to do in the morning was get up and enjoy myself.

Our engagement was very short, just 7 months so dress-wise I needed something quick and off the peg. Many dresses had a six month waiting time and I simply didn’t want to risk it not coming in time. The dress I chose was the second dress I tried on! It was from Brides & Maids in Grimsby and was by the designer Ronald Joyce. It fitted like a glove and as soon as I put it on I felt excited as it felt like the kind of dress I could have a lot of fun in!

.

I didn’t buy it straight away. I tried on dresses in different locations for two days but I kept thinking about that particular one, so at the end of the two days I rang the shop to see if they still had it and the lady said ‘ We put it in the back after you tried it on and haven’t let anyone else try it. We knew you would be back for it’. I had definitely made the right choice.

.

I had lots of accessories to choose from including two pairs of shoes and three different belts! I wore the cheapest of the two shoes, a sparkly silver pair from Red or Dead and never even wore a belt! I think I’ll be having an Ebay sale soon!

Richard didn’t know what he wanted but after trying on a few suits chose to go for a white tuxedo with the best man and father of the bride in black tuxedos. He says he felt like James Bond!

.

The bridesmaids were in made to order silk dresses matching the colour scheme of pink and green also bought from Brides and Maids in Grimsby.

We took inspiration from Burton Agnes Hall which is surrounded by hydrangeas so all the flowers throughout the day incorporated hydrangeas and vintage style roses in keeping with our theme. We mixed and matched as well, some flowers we had done professionally and others we did ourselves with flowers from the local supermarket.

.

I had a silver heart lock stitched into my bouquet which belonged to my grandma. She has dementia and couldn’t be with us on the day so I wanted to take a little memory of her with me. After the wedding I also took my bouquet to the war memorial at Lisett as a gesture of thanks to all those that fought for our freedom in the war.  My bridal bouquet and church flowers were by Flowers by Yvonne, Bridlington and the bridesmaid flowers and reception were done by us.

One of the most important aspect of the day for us was the food, we love fine dining and we enjoy nothing more than going to a nice restaurant and drinking some nice wine so we wanted to treat our guests to a slap up meal. Ceruti’s is one of my favourite restaurants and they provided us with a lovely three course meal of a warm scallop and prawn salad starter, sirloin steak and horseradish mash for main, and our favourite dessert of sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce. Carrying on our love of food we also made all our own wedding favours which where a mixture of chutneys, marmalade and piccalilli .

We also wanted our guests to experience something a little different so included in the reception was a tour of Burton Agnes Hall, we couldn’t let them leave without seeing it in all its splendour! Richard joked at the beginning of his speech ‘Welcome to Downton Abbey’.

I love baking at home and often make my own cakes so it was really important to me to have a big cake! We only had 40 guests but the leftovers from our tiers doubled up as my birthday cake two days later!  The cake was by Lucy Beal Cakery in Hedon.

Atken Photography did such an amazing job, they made us feel and look like stars. We loved having our photos taken in the different rooms of the house and jumping and running around the gardens!

My top tip for Brides Up North would be to be prepared for things to go wrong! They will but it doesn’t matter, there are people around to help and at the end of the day if your marrying the right person that’s all that matters.
