A veil is the must-have accessory for the dress of your dreams. You have your dress, shoes, jewellery and bouquet, but in my (humble) opinion, the veil is where the romance is AT.   A bridal veil is the magical ingredient  that will transform a simple dress into something really special, adding extravagance and luxury.  Friend of the wedding blog Melanie of Melanie James Bridal couldn’t agree more, and joins us in this morning’s Supplier Showcase to talk tradition and trains (the tulle, not the choo choo kind).

Melanie says:  In ancient times, a veil would guard against evil spirits and symbolise purity and innocence. In more modern times, the groom will lift the veil from his bride’s face at the wedding ceremony to suggest that he will now take care of his new wife. Alternatively, the bride’s father will lift the veil which traditionally symbolizes that he is happy to present the bride to the groom. Some historians reveal that the veil used to be lifted to make sure there was no trickery, so that the groom wouldn’t marry wrong woman! However, when the modern woman lifts her own veil from her face after the ceremony, this is understood to be symbolic that she is giving herself freely and independently.

The history of wedding veils is a fascinating one. A brief snapshot can reveal that veils are also used in dances around the world from ancient times to today. Wearing a veil hints at sexuality, accentuates movement and provides wonderful imagery, for example during belly dancing and the dance of the seven veils. In some parts of West Africa, men wear a veil from the age of twenty five. This covers their entire face and is not removed even in the company of family! In parts of India, Nepal and Pakistan, men wear wedding veils made of garlands of fresh flowers and especially marigolds. These cover the neck and face and are worn for the entire wedding day. A more elaborate veil, heavily laced and intricately beaded has traditionally indicated more wealth, and similarly the more exquisite the tiara the richer the brides’ family will be.

Wearing a wedding veil has never been out of fashion. Many members of the Royal Family pass their veils down throughout the following generations. This is such a wonderful custom which links women within their families. When you experience that magical moment in time as a bride wearing your veil, you will not only be taking part in your wedding ceremony, but you will be taking part in an age old custom. You will be participating in a tradition which has been performed by women across the world, throughout the centuries.
