Wedding season is in full swing, signalled by the numerous cars that can be spotted along the roads bearing the iconic ‘I’m carrying a bride’ ribbon of pride.
Traditionally, horses and carts, classic cars and vintage motors were the carriages of choice for brides and grooms – but today, almost anything goes. There are wedding helicopters, cabs, hummers, boats, hot air balloons, buses and tractors – you can even make your first journey as newlyweds in a tuk tuk, if you so desire.
But, while some couples find their wedding transport a doddle to arrange as they’re fortunate enough to have a relative with a swish car that they can borrow, others are simply spoilt for choice. So what mode of transport is going to get you all revved-up and what elements of the wedding manual do you need to consider when making that all important booking?
First things first, how many vehicles do you require and who for? In most cases the bride, her parents and maids will require transport to the venue so couples will need to think about how many vehicles they need – is the destination close enough for one vehicle to do two trips, or is a second required?
To get the groom to the church on time, and in style, some brides are choosing to surprise their hubby-to-be by arranging a high performance, chauffeur-driven sports car to pick them up on the morning of the wedding and whisk them off for an exhilarating spin before delivering them to the venue. Popular choices include 007-style Aston Martins and head-turning Porsche Boxsters.
If the ceremony and reception are taking place at different venues there is then the question of how to get both the wedding party and guests from A to B. This is where the wedding bus option can be winning choice. Whether you choose a vintage style bus, or London red double-decker, this mode of transport certainly has its plus points. Not only can you chauffer in excess of 70 people at once, but you can get the party started straight away with no designated drivers having to bow out of the proceedings. Some couples like to make the journey that bit more special by arranging a little sight-seeing tour for their guests along the way. This could be through the countryside, in a city centre or along the sea front, depending on the location of the venue. Couples can also arrange for drinks, treats and entertainment on the bus ride too, so everyone’s in high spirits by the time they arrive at the reception.
Alternatively, couples may prefer to travel separately to the reception as it gives them some all important alone time on their big day. You might like a cool Chrysler, regal Rolls Royce, flash Ferrari, or even a flamboyant pink Cadillac – just make sure you crack open a bottle of champers and enjoy a little moment at Mr and Mrs.
Finally, some newlyweds might like to keep the wedding magic going by booking a posh motor to deliver them to the airport as they prepare to jet off on honeymoon – maybe a Bentley, Mercedes or a Jag.
With so many options to consider, a good way for couples to decide on their chosen method of transport is to focus on their main aim – do you want to make a standout entrance by arriving in a helicopter? Would you rather the transport complement your theme like a rural tractor or a vintage bus? Maybe you’d like vehicles that reflect your personalities, such as a cheeky VW Beetle or camper van? Or are you simply on the look-out for something that bit different that will be make the day even more memorable for you and your guests – cue the tuk tuk!

But before signing on the dotted line, be sure to check what’s included in the price. Do the vehicles come decorated with bows, ribbons, and flowers as standard? Is champagne included and will there be opportunities for photos? Also, you need to be sure that the firm you choose is reliable so look for recommendations, make sure they know the route they’ll take on the day and also that they have plans in place in case of road closures or bad weather.
After that sit back, relax and enjoy the ride!
