So, now you’ve chosen your vibrant confetti mix, how about having an alternative confetti moment with a confetti piñata? One for the craft-loving brides out there, here we share our step-by-step guide on how to make your very own:
What you need:
- Natural petal confetti
- Cardboard
- Crepe paper
- Ribbon
- Clear tape
- Glue
- Metal ruler
- Stanley knife
- Pen
Step 1: Draw a shape for your piñata onto the cardboard. We chose a heart, but you could opt for a star, circle or even a funky geometric shape.
Step 2: Cut out your shape using a Stanley knife. Then use this as a template to make another heart to ensure you have two identical shapes.
Step 3: Cut a long strip of cardboard and attach to the edge of the cardboard shape with clear tape.
Step 4: Leave an open section at the bottom where you will add a flap to allow the confetti to fall from.
Step 5: Attach the second cardboard shape to the other side of the cardboard strip.
Step 6: Cut the crepe paper to the width of the piñata and cut strips along the length of the paper. Starting from the bottom, add a line of glue and secure one strip of your cut crepe paper, continue upwards until the side is complete. Repeat with the back and the sides.
Step 7: Cut a small piece of cardboard, slightly longer than the opening at the bottom and attach with glue to make a flap. Add a small hole in the flap to thread some pretty ribbon and tie to secure. This will be your pulling mechanism.
Step 8: Add the natural petal confetti.
Step 9: Add a hole to the top of your piñata and thread some ribbon to enable you to hang in a doorway, tree or from the ceiling.
Step 10: When you’re ready for the confetti release, pull the bottom ribbon and enjoy the falling confetti!
Top Tips
- Order enough natural petal confetti to fill the piñata – the amount will depend on the size of the piñata you are making.
- Smaller petals such as delphiniums and wildflowers are best for the confetti piñata as they are light and will flutter slowly as they are released.
- Give your piñata a trial run to make sure it works. The beauty of having a ribbon to release the confetti is that you can have fun with your piñata over and over again!
- Why not make your piñata into a game for guests, especially the little ones, and hide sweets or small favours inside to be released when the confetti falls.
