Today’s real wedding between Hazel and Marc gives us a real flavour of their personalities; it’s lovely when a wedding is a true expression of the couple and, even though we’ve never met them, we feel like we know a little bit about these lovely newlyweds just from the details they added to their big day.
Hazel and Marc had a lot of input from their nearest and dearest while planning their wedding too, with the bride’s mother growing all the fresh flowers herself in her garden for a really personal – not to mention seasonal – feel. They even had an original poem penned by a close friend read out during the ceremony and friends singing and playing the guitar to add a special touch.
The décor and details add to the cosy, rustic setting; from the dried flowers in the bouquets and button holes and calligraphy adorned leaf place settings, to the swags of fairy lights and trawling greenery draped along the venue’s exposed brick walls and beams.
Other star elements for us include Hazel’s pretty boho style dress and flower crown as well as the flashes of mustard yellow throughout the flowers, groomsmen’s ties and on the rather spectacular cake, which is beautifully bedecked with fresh fruit and flowers – naked but with plenty of adornments to preserve its modesty!

: We got engaged in Wensleydale on a snowy winter weekend away. Marc took me by surprise when he got down on one knee at a waterfall!We got married on Sunday 12th August 2018. We wanted to go for a summer date and needed to set the date before my twin sister moves to New Zealand in autumn. It is also the peak of the Perseids shooting star shower.
Our chosen venue was Cubley Hall in Penistone, South Yorkshire. We were hoping for an outdoor ceremony at the band stand, but the English weather let us down in the end! Nevertheless, the barn has really nice cosy lighting with fairy lights and candles, and the walls have plenty of decorations, so you really don’t need to add much extra yourself. We would definitely recommend the venue to other brides and grooms as they did a great job of our big day.
Theme-wise, we loosely went for a natural summer meadow/boho style, both being outdoorsy people.
In terms of colour, we had no set scheme. My mum grew the flowers in her garden, so it was basically all the colours of August flowers.
My dress was from Lace & Grace in Bristol and the designer was Rembo Styling. I chose it because it was light and floaty.
Marc went for a blue French Connection suit and the groomsmen’s suits were hired from Moss Bros.
The bridesmaids wore multi-way silver dresses from Oasis.
Our hair was styled by Kelly Hanks from Kelly Hanks Hair Design, who did a fantastic job. Victoria Marley MUA also did a great job on the makeup.
Our photographer was Jenna Kathleen – she did a fabulous job and has caught lots of excellent and natural ‘fly on the wall’ pictures. My boss Gary Oliver very kindly filmed the day for us.
When it came to the flowers, we went for dried flower bouquets, a flower crown and buttonholes from The Artisan Dried Flower Company on Etsy. The company grows the flowers in Staffordshire and they looked beautiful. The advantage of having dried ones is that you can keep them afterwards! And they smell like a summer meadow.
For the table decorations, my mum did an absolutely amazing job of growing the flowers from scratch in her garden. The whole family got together the day before to do the arranging.
Instead of favours, we decided to opt for extra wine for our guests.
Our cake was a naked cake with fresh fruit and flowers made by Cake Expectations.
For the wedding breakfast, we had a three-course silver service meal with a selection of wines provided by the venue.
To entertain our guests during the day we had some outdoor games and toys, and table quizzes. In the evening, we had the excellent Sheffield-based ceilidh band Bobbing Joe, who did a great job at getting everyone up and dancing.
A special touch on the day was that Abbie, my close friend since school days, had written a really lovely personal poem about us both, which she read out during the ceremony. Our talented friends Shaun and Marloes also played and sang some beautiful songs during the ceremony, which made it feel extra special. My twin sister surprised me with an unannounced speech, which was really touching.
In fact, my favourite part of the day has to be the speeches! But we both loved the whole day.
For our honeymoon, we went to Cornwall, near Land’s End, for 11 days straight after the wedding. It was lovely to get away and relax for a good length of time, after all the business leading up to the wedding. We went surfing and drank lots of champagne; it was great!
My top tip to other Brides Up North is – don’t get too bogged down in the details and don’t give in to the pressure to spend loads of money to keep up with the Jones’. You will have a good day with all your friends and family together, whatever happens!
