Riki Dalal for an elegant wedding at Ellingham Hall – Ellie & John

Alexis Forsyth

The decadent spring wedding of Ellie and John took place at the breath-takingly beautiful Ellingham Hall, nestled between the towns of Berwick and Alnwick.

The exclusivity of the venue, as well as its sumptuous on-site accommodation, meant the newlyweds could extend their wedding into a weekend-long celebration at this elegant Northumberland estate.

Timeless styling and a chic colour palette of blush, cream and sage green hues blend with hydrangea, roses and eucalyptus for true sophistication, with a blossoming flower wall bringing a contemporary touch to the setting.

: Although we’d known each other from school since the age of ten and spent most of these years as friends, it wasn’t until we were 21 that we realised it was meant to be! John proposed on a boat on Lake Windermere during a weekend in the Lake District on a sunny day in July 2017. He asked me to turn away and pretend to drive the boat for a photo and when I turned back around, he was down on one knee – I had no idea at all!

We got married at Ellingham Hall on 9th June 2019 and had the reception there too. It’s beautiful, quirky and totally unique. Having exclusive use for the two nights makes you feel like you have run of a stately home for the weekend with the perks of having the staff to make sure everything runs smoothly.

We didn’t really have a theme; it was mainly focused around our colour scheme. But we wanted everything to tie in and so we had floral designs on all the stationery. John is a professional golfer, so we managed to squeeze that in by having our table names based on his favourite golf courses!

Our colour scheme consisted of blush, cream and a little bit of sage green. We thought these colours were perfect for a spring wedding, and we were looking for something that would still look good when we look back on the day in 20 years’ time.

Si Bridal was the second shop I visited and the dress I chose, by designer Riki Dalal, was actually picked out for me by Louise who works there. I had imagined myself in a totally different style so my recommendation would be to try on every style, even if you think it won’t look good, because you will be surprised!

I loved how the dress looked like different colours depending on the light because of the blush underskirt, which tied in really well with the colour scheme too. I really loved the lace detail and the nude section in the bodice as well.

John wore a three-piece suit from House of Fraser while the groomsmen wore suit from Next.

John’s sister Alexandra made the dresses for the bridesmaids which added a personal touch to the day.

Stylist Jen Davies took care of hair while makeup artist Jennifer Long was on beauty.

Margarita Hope captured our day. Margarita’s style of photography was perfect for us, she captures the best moments of not only the bride and groom but the guests as well, which meant a lot to us. We’d definitely recommend her! All of our suppliers were fantastic but Margarita went above and beyond our expectations, she spent 13 hours with us and caught the most amazing moments!

Lavenders Blue provided the flowers for my bouquet which were cream hydrangea, blush roses and eucalyptus leaves. They smelt and looked amazing!

The Whole Sch-Bang supplied our chair covers and Lavender Blue provided the gypsophila to add to the end of the rows that lined the aisle, with hydrangeas and roses along the mantle piece. We went for nearly all cream in this room as this was a nice contrast against the dark wood.

We had a three-tier semi naked cake from Great British Cupcakery which was delicious and just as we had imagined. We went for three different sponges – lemon and elderflower with blueberry frosting, chocolate with white chocolate frosting, and a Victoria sponge.

We gave everyone a scratch card in a holder saying “Wishing you riches from the new Mr and Mrs” with a 5p stuck to it for a bit of fun and the hope a few could win some money! We gave the best man a fake scratch card which was very funny when he realised he hadn’t actually won £100,000!

To start we went for tomato and red pepper soup with mozzarella bon bons. The main was chicken breast with a mini chicken Kiev, potato dauphinoise and seasonal vegetables and desert was a white chocolate and passionfruit cheesecake which we thought was ideal for a spring wedding. We had red and white wine on the tables.

Jane Gray Wedding Pianist played during the ceremony and the drinks reception. I had always known I wanted a pianist to play when I walked down the aisle and I had the song (Berlin Song by Ludovico Einaudi) in mind for ages! It was such a lovely song, which Jane played beautifully and set the mood perfectly for the ceremony.

Our DJ for the reception was from Icon Entertainments who met with us beforehand and made sure he played the music we loved which meant we had a great party to end the day.

Special touches

We had a flower wall provided by Flower Walls North East (who I would highly recommend) and we set up a camera and tripod where our guests could take their own photographs. We also had a Polaroid camera for guests to stick in our guest book alongside their message.

My sister made all the stationery which was great as we could make the designs really personal to us.

Ellingham Hall is a great venue regardless of the time of year. There is plenty of room inside if the weather isn’t great but amazing outside space if you are lucky enough to have the weather! There is loads of accommodation for your guests and being able to have exclusive use for the two nights means you can make a weekend out of it

Best bit

Such a hard question! But, apart from the ceremony, the last song of the night being surrounded by our closest friends and family singing to Don’t Look Back In Anger by Oasis was definitely a highlight.

We went to Dubai and the Maldives. We knew we wanted a dual destination holiday with a short city stay where we had plenty of things to do followed by a relaxing break. Dubai was incredible and the Maldives was beautiful, we just wish we could have stayed for longer!

My top tip for other Brides Up North would be to invest your time in the big things and don’t get too stressed about the smaller details. Also, get as many things as you can booked well in advance so you can enjoy your engagement! Finally, we would also recommend on the day to make sure you have time together alone. We had a few minutes straight after our ceremony and we were really pleased we had that time to ourselves!
