Forest Finery. A Styled Bridal Shoot at Holmes Mill

Julia Smith

If beautiful blooms and dreamy dresses are totally your thing, then you’re going to be ALL the heart eyes over this gorgeous styled shoot.

Holding back on the details in order to really showcase the setting, blooms and attire, this beautifully curated big day vision just goes to show that impact isn’t always about the extras – keeping the focus steady can be equally impressive.

Centred around a natural forest theme, super talented Lancashire florist (and a Brides Up North Sponsor, no less), the fabulous Sarah McCraig of Olive Owl Flowers, pulled the look together with the help of a host of fellow North West suppliers whose skills are seriously on point.

We are totally in love with the abundance of enchanting ferns and foliage which is beautifully accented with blooms in the most exquisite of buttery and mustard hues. When combined with dreamy boho attire, unique accessories and modern menswear, we’d be surprised if this fine forest theme isn’t a look that you might like to recreate for your own big day. Here to supply all the need-to-know details is the wonderful Sarah…

INSPIRATION

Sarah says: We wanted to create a ‘forest’ inspired set up but with a romantic and alternative edge. We used a lot of greenery and kept the colours neutral with hints of brassy tones for contrast. We took inspiration from outdoor woodland weddings by incorporating logs and moss. We used Edison lightbulbs supplied by Typical Type and modern metallic lanterns from my collection at Olive Owl Flowers to create a romantic and enchanted ambience.

LOCATION

Holmes Mill in Clitheroe, gives the perfect balance of an industrial and alternative venue but with all the glamour and comforts that you’d expect at a modern-day wedding venue. The natural light, exposed pipes and vintage cinema chairs lent themselves perfectly to the textured and romantic florals that I designed and created for the shoot.

STYLING

We kept this shoot simple in terms of suppliers as we really wanted to focus on the venue, flowers and our models’ looks, so for that reason we chose to keep the details minimal.

We had a suspended floral Silver Birch log design that hung aloft the banquet guest table. We incorporated more logs into the tablescape with chucky metallic candlesticks, lanterns, plants, moss and flower vases. We used black candlesticks to have a stunning contrast against the brassy florals and forest green foliage.

Typical Type brought their industrial Edison bulb backdrop which was decorated with complementary florals.

The items from the tablescape were also used in the ceremony set up. This shows how you can be versatile and savvy with your big day’ décor, using the same floral displays for wow factor at both the ceremony and the wedding breakfast.

ATTIRE

For the bride, Stephanie at Love Story Bridal was keen to reflect the contemporary, boho feel of the venue and so chose to feature ‘Kellan’ by Casablanca Bridal, a quirky fitted dress with a crochet style lace, and ‘Genevieve’ from the Enzoani Beautiful collection, a modern-vintage, bat-winged gown in a gorgeous nude hue. Both the gowns were slim-fitting but comfortable reflecting the laid-back glamour of the theme and sitting beautifully against the pops of orange and green of the flowers and the gothic black candles. Strong lines in soft fabrics made for a striking statement, with such looks ideal options for a bride that wishes to be bold and beautiful on her big day.

To complete our bridal vision, Earth Links Boutique created some stunning and delicate hair and jewellery accessories. The colours and vibe of the designs went perfectly with the effortless beauty we were aiming to create.

Our male model’s suit was from ASOS and was the perfect match for the shoot and the venue. We chose a forest green jacket, waistcoat and trouser to match in the with florals and finished with a mustard and navy floral tie to contrast.

BEAUTY

Amy Lauren MUA took care of the makeup, opting for a rustic theme and inspired by a mustard hue to inject a little bit of sunshine! The look is more suited to those brides who want to be a bit different and that are not afraid to experiment with a little colour on their wedding day.

Charlotte Riley styled our model’s lovely thick hair into a boho braid and added some fresh flowers for a more romantic look.

RESULTS

We wanted to create effortlessly beautiful photos that captured the relaxed ambience of the day… and I’m thrilled that we achieved that!

Kathryn Taylor is one of my ‘go to’ photographers as you can always rely on her to bring the beauty of a shoot to life in her stunning images, which is evident here!

The models were amazing and had such great chemistry, which comes through on camera resulting in some rather gorgeous images.

It’s fair to say that the whole team brought their A-game and created something utterly dreamy!
