Foodie Heaven! Minimooning at Mallory Court Country House Hotel & Spa

Julia Smith

We love a hotel jaunt here at Brides Up North. Let’s be honest, who doesn’t? So, when Mallory Court Country House Hotel and Spa in Warwickshire offered us the chance to have a pre-Christmas foodie getaway, it would’ve been rude to say no!

Nestled in the heart of Warwickshire, Mallory Court is a perfect spot for a romantic break, mini moon or real foodie wedding destination. The hotel boasts four AA Red Stars, and it is well deserving of every one of them. We were warmly welcomed at reception by the friendly team, who remained on hand throughout our stay, no matter what our request or query was; excellent service from their staff is something the hotel prides itself on – and succeeds in every manner.

The 43-bedroomed hotel is set within 10 acres of lush, green grounds. Close your eyes and imagine the perfect English country house, surrounded by flowers, trees, herb gardens..… yep, you get the picture. From croquet lawn to rose garden, you are free to wander and potentially lose the day in their delightful surroundings. The gardens play a major part in this hotels success: Chef Director Simon Haigh is committed to using as much garden-grown produce across Mallory Court’s food offerings (keep reading, we have A LOT to say about this!) as possible.

The hotel itself has all the charm of a typical English country house, but finished with style and depth. Oak wood panelling adorns the walls of the dining room and old stone fireplaces keep things toasty. Our room – like all at Mallory Court – featured everything you need for a nice romantic getaway: a large comfortable bed, well stocked mini bar, excellent bath and shower facilities and top-quality finishes.

Before dinner, we were invited to sample the on-site Elan Spa. Yes please! Added to Mallory Court around five years ago, the sumptuous spa is tucked away from the main hotel building in its gardens. Offering Temple Spa products, instant relaxation beckoned as we headed in for our blissful full body massages. After a quick dip in the pool, we needed no encouragement to try out the outdoor jacuzzi. Set on a quiet, private terrace, it is the perfect romantic spot to sit back and relax under the stars.

Unfortunately, our time at the spa had to come to an end as it was nearing dinner time – trust me, only the offer of food and drink would have got me out of there. A quick turnaround, and it was time for some pre-dinner drinks in the lounge.

Mallory Court loves food and The Dining Room has been awarded 3 AA rosettes for its land to plate concept. No two days are the same here, as the kitchen team create different bespoke tasting menus each night, dependant on what is ripe and ready in the garden or available at the local market. Working to a monthly theme, the team pride themselves on creative, honest British and European cooking, with elements of nostalgia.

Whilst supping our classic cocktails in front of the fire, we were served crispy broad beans – a nifty little twist on the traditional nuts. This was just the opener for our foodie experience. From slow cooked hen’s egg with house cured chorizo and artichoke puree, to roast breast of mallard duck with confit spring roll and Armagnac sauce, every dish of our seven-course tasting menu was impeccably presented and tasted divine.

The waiting team explained the concepts on offer that evening in detail as the courses arrived, with a special mention to Dorian, whose charm, wit and professionalism wrapped up an excellent experience.

If tasting menus aren’t for you (say what!), Mallory Court offers light lunches and afternoon tea each day in the Orchard House Café. The café offers a beautiful stone terrace which overlooks the south-facing lawns and gardens, perfect for a summer sitting. Alternatively, the kitchen will pack you a picnic, and you can go and explore and enjoy other secluded parts of the garden, finding your own perfect spot for a romantic lunch date.

What more could you want from a getaway?! An all-round excellent experience – fabulous food, stunning spa, cracking cocktails and superb service – Mallory Court, we will be back.
