I grew up in the beautiful city of Durham and spent many a teenage year hanging around it’s cobbled streets. One fairly recent addition to the City is the Gala Theatre area, which is as sleek and modern as the rest of the place is quaint. Although these new shops and restaurants popped up after I had left home, my Mum, bridesmaids and I spent many a happy afternoon in the Ebony Champagne Bar after multiple bridesmaid and wedding dress fittings at local boutique Heart Of Durham (now Wild Brides At Heart).

Today we join soon-to-be-weds Joy and David for an engagement shoot at the little complex. It’s not the most obvious of locations, but I love how Richard Leng has worked with the modern surroundings to create a thoroughly beautiful backdrop for Joy and David’s love story.

Joy says: We got engaged on our three-year anniversary… in the kitchen. David had cooked a meal and proposed with the ring my dad bought my mam for their opal anniversary. It was a total surprise!

We get married in July at Westoe Baptist Church and our reception is at The Marriott in Seaburn.

We met on the August bank holiday in South Shields, we recognised each other from the gym David worked in at the time. It’s not the most romantic of stories! We went to a couple of bars on the seafront for our first date and the cinema on the second. I don’t think it was true love from the start but we both had booked holidays with our friends before we got together and I think it was when we were away from each other that we realised how we felt. I missed him loads and kept thinking how much he would have loved it in Florida.

I love how David makes me laugh by doing stupid things and can distract me from being ‘huffy’. He loves my smile.

We just wish to stay happy and hope we can do this by remembering to make time for each other and not take each other for granted.

We really enjoyed the engagement shoot, its helped David feel more relaxed and I feel more excited now. The wedding is getting closer and looking at the photographs makes me wonder what our wedding ones will be like.
.
It has been a great way to get to know our photographer so we feel more relaxed and it was a lovely way to spend the afternoon as a couple, even if David was a little embarrassed by the public displays of affection!
