David celebrates 30 years in business this year – I know, he doesn’t look old enough does he – and is going stronger than ever, after winning the Contemporary Wedding Photographer Of The Year Award 2013 with the MPA Northern Region. Let’s say hello!
How did you get into wedding photography?
David: Photography is something I have been doing since school days – a long time ago, almost at the start of the Galaxy! My father Robert Sinclair Lawson was a great photographer and it became my passion from then on in. My qualifications are L.M.P.A and also A.M.P.A which were achieved through the Master Photographers Association, the only professional photography organization in the UK where you have to be full time.
Why wedding photography specifically?
Wedding photography is the most rewarding of all photography as you are capturing a once in a lifetime opportunity for the bride and groom and it’s an incredible personal satisfaction for me knowing I have recorded their fantastic day and the done very best job in the World.
What do you like most about being a wedding photographer?
Shooting happy people!
How do you get couples to relax on the day?
Relaxing is a quite an art – by being relaxed yourself the bride and groom will mirror this so keeping calm and being confident will get the best results.
Any advice to any brides who don’t like to have their picture taken?
80% of the Great British public seem not to keen on having their picture taken, in my option this is because they did not like their school picture on the wall and associate this with having a professional portrait taken. We need to love ourselves more and I believe that having me take their photography will boost their confidence.
What sort of makeup should a bride wear to look great in her pictures?
Speak to a professional makeup artist and have a trial. It s important that you feel comfortable on your day.
Anything to avoid which might look bad in the wedding pictures?
Do not have a spray tan the day before your wedding!
Which wedding would you most like to photograph and why?
I would have loved to have photographed the Beckhams’ wedding day – they are such a cool couple who gel together so well and seem so much in love.
Any funny stories to share?
I once shot a wedding in church and the organist forgot to show up so all the congregation stood up and hummed “Here Comes The Bride!” it was amazing and also so funny. The couple loved it and the guests laughed all day.
What sets you apart from other wedding photographers?
Simply there is no substitute for experience. 30 years worth of experience is something you cannot buy over the counter or be taught in a classroom or read about in a book. Having a creative eye and the ability to see an idea where others don’t. Creating something from nothing, seeing beyond the normal. Having the best team of people around me who are all on the same page. You get one chance to photograph the most important day of the bride and groom’s life there is no going back, we run while others walk.
