A Scottish Wedding In The Smoke! A Real Wedding, Nicola & Ed

Julia Smith

.

Today I have a simple and stunning Scottish themed wedding, which took place down South in the ol’ smoke, courtesy of Didsbury based bridal accessories designer Nicola of Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe, a wedding blog Featured Supplier.

.

Before we get down to the bridal inspiration and loveliness, Nicola would like to remind you all about the Vintage Wedding Fair taking place this weekend at the St George Hotel in Harrogate from 12pm – 5pm.  Nicola will be offering a 15% discount on all her garters on the day.

.

It’s a busy weekend for Silver Sixpence In Her Shoe, as Nicola’s work is also available to view at The White Room Bridal in Sheffield this weekend as part of their Jazz Era Themed Stephanie Allin weekend.

.

Now, let’s check out this lovely lady’s own Real Wedding

Over to Nicola: We got engaged on Waterloo bridge in London on Monday 10th Dec 2006 during the rush hour! Ed faked a breakdown while I was on the back of his Vespa to get me onto the bridge!  We actually married on October 17th 2009 -a long gap as we went travelling for a year and a half after getting engaged and before getting married.  We actually planned and did the wedding in 8 months when we got back from travelling!

We were married at Islington Town Hall in North London- we had the council chambers there. The reception was held at the Empress of India a bistro style pub in Victoria Park, East London (sadly since shut down).  It was a beautiful round room and felt intimate even though it could accommodate 100 people or so. The reception venue was chosen as it was literally perfect for the relaxed reception we wanted and was pretty much the only one we found that could accommodate our numbers.

Our wedding had a city of London theme along with a touch of Scottish-ness! My family are all Scottish and so coming down en mass was a real trip for them. We had a piper play as they were arriving. The London theme was run through from the big red bus that transported the guests to the reception to the table names being famous London landmarks.

My dress was not a wedding dress – it was a cream silk evening dress by Roberto Rodriguez and I got it in Harrods. It was a complete accident – my mum saw it when we were being touristy there one day just before we booked the wedding. I tried it on with no make up, awful hair and no shoes but I knew it was exactly what I wanted. I am not a traditional wedding dress sort of girl and would probably have bought a vintage dress otherwise. I hadn’t ever really thought about what I would wear to get married until it was upon me and knew more about what I didn’t want than what I did want.

My bridesmaid had a lovely dark plum silk dress so this then came through into the colours – I had thistles and dark red foliage in my bouquet along with cream roses that seemed to match the frills on the front of my dress. I didn’t expect my mum to wear these colours and preferred her to choose what she wanted – she was giving me away and looked lovely in a teal dress and matching shrug.

We did a lot of the details ourselves. The flowers were from N16 flowers in North London where we lived. She did the buttonholes and bouquets and me and my mum did all the vases for the venue as the tables in the bistro could not really take centrepieces. I wanted it to look very homemade and natural. Our photographer was Rebecca Prigmore – she is brilliant and has since done a family portrait for us too. She takes very natural pictures. My mother in law made a big chocolate wedding cake for us and plenty of extras for the guests.

I took a black cab to the Town Hall and it waited for us. I asked my neighbour who was a cabbie and paid him what he asked for it. He put a suit on and a ribbon on the front of the cab – it was so kind of him! My husband wanted to go by Vespa given it had played a part in our engagement but I didn’t want helmet head so we visited all our relatives on it the next day instead at their various hotels. Our guests travelled in a big red bus from North to East London.

We did a little kit on each table for the guests to play a guess the length of the speeches sweepstake and went round just before the speeches explaining to the guests how it worked. It really got people talking. I also bought little packs of tissues with London underground maps on for the guests in case they had a tear or two! I gave all my flowers away at the end of the night too – including some white metal hearts decorated with thistles – my Scottish family were very pleased! Our food was all served on sharing boards in the middle of the tables so people had to be sociable about eating!

We had a great DJ – through my friend. He played at a lot of the local venues to us and played no cheese (a stipulation from my hubs) Lots of 60s and northern soul. I have a lasting memory of my auntie rocking out to Primal Scream at midnight!

We honeymooned in Iceland for a week- a few days in Reykjavik and a few days on a remote peninsula nearby.

.

My advice to other Brides Up North is that anything can be done- enjoy the planning as it is over all too quickly. It is meant to be a happy day so don;t get stressed or argue with your partner over silly details. I loved the whole day! It is totally magical having everyone you love in the room together wishing you well. It is overwhelming.
