How did you get into wedding photography?

.

It all started almost eight years ago when my daughter was born and I purchased my first digital camera. I then found a passion for landscape and portrait photography. In 2005 my cousin got married and I took my point and shoot to the wedding. At the wedding I noticed the official photographer was only taking traditional family shots and none of their friends so I decided to capture candid shots of the wedding party. My cousin loved the images and said she preferred my photos to those of the official photographer! In 2006 I was asked to photograph the wedding of a friend and I found that I really enjoyed myself and my friends loved their wedding photos! After photographing several more weddings for family and friends I realised that I could actually make a living from my hobby. Since 2008 I have been a full-time photographer and I haven’t looked back!

.

I have no photography qualifications and I am mainly self taught though I have undertaken two courses totalling three days. One was a Brett Harkness wedding course and the other was Dan Pearson’s off camera flash photography training.

Why wedding photography specifically?

.

Knowing just how important a couple’s wedding day is to them, I love capturing the day as it unfolds. I am always on the lookout for those moments that would be otherwise forgotten. Being a wedding photographer is such a rewarding job, knowing that you have preserved such special moments, capturing real emotion, laughter and even tears!

What is your favourite thing about being a wedding photographer?

.
Taking photographs is my favourite thing in the whole world (besides spending quality time with my wife and daughter). To see the pleasure that couples get from my images makes my job so rewarding. I am very lucky – I love my job, not many people can say that!

How do you get couples to relax on the day?

.

I find that a pre-wedding shoot always helps to calm the couple’s nerves. It is a great way to get to know one another and how I work. I am a pretty laid back person and have been told by some brides that it has helped them be around someone who is calm. Occasionally I do have to say to a bride “Just take a big breath and relax.”

Any advice to any brides who don’t like to have their picture taken?

.
Most people don’t like having their photos taken including me! My style is mainly journalistic so the couples can just be themselves and enjoy their wedding day. If the couple do want some creative portraits I usually wait until after the speeches and most couples are glad to escape the wedding party for photos.

Anything to avoid which might look bad in the wedding pictures?

.

Some brides have issues with side profile photos because of either their nose or chin. This is why a pre wedding shoot is a good time to explain to me if you feel uncomfortable having certain photos. I can offer advice on how to pose for shots that are flattering whatever shape you are.

Any memorable weddings that you have captured?

.
They are all good for different reasons but I particularly enjoyed Nina and Graham’s Papakata wedding. Nina and Graham chose an English country garden theme for their special day and the setting was just perfect. Erected in a field behind the family home stood a large Papakata tepee – the venue for the wedding celebrations was the ideal choice set amongst the stunning North Yorkshire countryside. Later in the evening Nina surprised Graham and got up on stage and sang two songs to Graham with their friend on acoustic guitar – it was an emotional moment!

Tell us about your wedding day?

.

I was married at Whitley Hall in Sheffield in 1998. I was extremely nervous and even made my wife do my speech!  Our wedding photography was very traditional and staged with no natural or passionate shots, maybe this is why I am completely the opposite in my work!

.

.
What sets you apart from other wedding photographers?

.

I am not at all cheesy. I am extremely creative and always on the lookout for new ideas. Even when I return to venues no two weddings of mine will look the same. Due to my journalistic style I like to blend into the background and capture the day as it unfolds without being the ‘annoying wedding photographer’! I have had plenty of comments like this: “We have so many people say that they didn’t you were there and how nice it was not to keep having a camera poked in their faces while they were trying to catch up with friends” .  Some photographers come across loud and bossy, I am the opposite.
