Sheer Simplicity. A Styled Shoot at Spanish City

Sarah Symonds

Using a very limited palette for your big day can create a stunning effect in a way that pops of bright colour just can’t compare to. Today’s featured shoot, created by Edward Ashley Photography, brings a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘white wedding’.

Edward really wanted to showcase a venue that he thinks is going to go from strength to strength in the very near future. He’s pulled together a winning team of local suppliers and created a gorgeous, unfussy and minimalist style for your viewing pleasure. And of course you get views for days from the floor-to-ceiling windows of this beautiful coastal venue. The updated Spanish City in Whitley Bay, just outside Newcastle upon Tyne, could be the ideal spot for couples seeking a sophisticated location with seaside twist.

Spanish City offers couples a real sense of space, and this shoot pairs modern and simplistic with classical features. An unusual mix and we love it! We’re seeing lots of glass, simple white church candles, white backdrops and crisp green foliage with white florals. There’s a touch of tweed, a little nod to the classics, to warm things up a bit and the overall effect is beautiful.

Edward says: I wanted the shoot to reflect the setting. It’s bright, airy, light, peaceful, and modern.

This idea behind the shoot was to bring together a group of talented North East wedding suppliers to create something truly special. I wanted to showcase what is still a fairly new North East wedding venue that is becoming increasingly popular – I’ve noticed enquiries from brides and grooms getting married there increase significantly over the last year.

I love Spanish City as a wedding venue. It’s right on the coast, and the ceremony room has stunning views out to sea. This makes the backdrops for photography there absolutely stunning. You can even take couples up to the roof, or down to the beach, for wedding photographs.

To keep things classy, clean, and understated, we limited the flowers to a narrow colour palate, while still keeping things beautiful and elegant. Charisma Florists did an excellent job of balancing this.

Flawless stationery by Made To Treasure Stationery and the beautiful venue dressing by The Event Dressers was made to reflect the hues within the flowers, being mainly white with some natural greens, which was subtle but worked perfectly.

In keeping with the theme behind the shoot and the setting, the attire featured very smart, understated wedding suits from Smart As Suit in Whitley Bay, and a beautiful selection of stylish and elegant wedding dresses from Accent Original Bridal Wear. Since this is a modern venue, modern style suits and gowns were chosen. Based on couples I’ve photographed, tweed is very popular with groomsmen at present, so I was keen to incorporate this. I think it complemented the interior of Spanish City well.

Hair was provided by Tina Elliot Hairstyling and makeup was provided by Philippa Walker for both the bride and groom. I’ve worked with Tina at a few weddings before and thought her style worked so well for what we were after – very clean, modern, and understated. Hence, we opted to have the brides hair down with some loose curls. Philippa Walker is a very successful MUA from New Zealand who has recently moved back to the UK and this was the first time I’d actually worked with her. I just love the natural, flawless look of her bridal work so I was really keen to get her onboard. We’re hoping both of these styles will appeal to brides and grooms who are looking to go for beautiful, elegant, understated hair and makeup for their special day.

The shoot was a really friendly and relaxed day, and all the suppliers got on really well. Models and suppliers alike all put in a top effort and really made the day go smoothly. The aim of bringing together a group of talented North East wedding suppliers to create something truly special was definitely achieved. As we had such a great group of suppliers and models together, everyone kept bouncing creativity off each other and there was a really synergistic positive atmosphere. Some suppliers have subsequently gone on to work together again as a result, which is really fantastic. We’re also really excited to be part of the UNVEILED Network. It’s just so fantastic to be amongst so many talented wedding professionals!
