Heart Of The City. An Urban Wedding Styled Shoot at Kelham Island Museum

Sarah Symonds

Cool couples, this one’s for you! Timeless romance meets industrial island chic and barefoot boho in today’s quirky Sheffield-based urban wedding shoot.

Featuring a spot of island life today as our styled shoot is set on a 900 year old man-made island! How cool?! The industrial Kelham Island Museum provides the perfect backdrop to this modern and cool tale of romance.

The concept for today’s styled shoot was thunk up by the lovely UNVEILED Network Member Elizabeth Kate Bridal, a boutique in Scunthorpe with a pretty aesthetic and relaxed bridal vibe who want to make their brides feel as amazing as they look. Looking at the photos for the shoot, I think we can safely say they’ve nailed it. With names such as Rebecca Ingram, Enzoni and Willowby by Watters in stock, whatever your style, Elizabeth Kate have got you covered and today it’s all been beautifully captured by the edgy cool Veil & Gun.

In new news, Elizabeth Kate will also be launching their sister brand, Electric Bride, this winter, offering a different range of gowns whilst maintaining their signature relaxed vibe and attitude. We can’t wait to see what the new venture holds for the team!

CONCEPT

Kim says: We absolutely love the way that styled shoots enable you to live out your wildest wedding dreams. With the impending launch of our sister brand Electric Bride, we took this opportunity to demonstrate our shared ethos. Our philosophy is very much that you should have your wedding, your way. We believe that you shouldn’t be afraid to display your personality through your styling choices and we really wanted to showcase this in a fun and beautiful way.

LOCATION

Having lived in Sheffield for many years, we’ve always adored Kelham Island Museum, with it’s position almost nestled away in the heart of the city. Rooted in steel city history, it has incredible versatile spaces which provided an industrial backdrop to both contrast and compliment the softness of our gowns.

A striking Victorian building situated on a man-made island that’s over 900 years old, Kelham Island Museum boasts magnificent backdrops against the flow of the passing River Don. With unique buildings reminiscent of the island’s industrial history, it beautifully combines steel city heritage within an urban setting to make a truly inspiring experience for your wedding day.

With exposed brick walls, impressive high ceilings, expansive rooms and buckets full of quirky charm, this unconventional location was everything we could want from a venue whilst giving us the space to create different looks.

STYLING

We needed the coolest suppliers around to really make our vision come to life. We knew that we wanted to play with the space whilst keeping the focus on a ‘modern romance with an edge’. Wild Peak Events rose to the challenge organizing two incredible set ups. We’re talking boho chic with a macrame backdrop and industrial glamour with scaffolding, neons and disco balls!

Mark at Wild Wedding Days in Sheffield popped over to offer up some marquee signs which gave us a retro vibe. They have over 25 years experience in creating unique event spaces in a variety of locations in and around South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, and an extensive range of marquees to suit every occasion. Alongside marquee hire, they offer accessories such as staging and dance floors, lighting, chairs, table signs and retro wooden benches.

The signs we used tied in perfectly with the roller skates and awesome stationery provided by Suzanne Oddy Design from Yorkshire. Suzanne creates stationery to complement your special day, whether you’re looking for beautiful, personalised invitations or

one-of-a-kind bespoke designs. With a degree in Illustration under her belt, she has a unique, highly personalised style that goes beyond simply graphic design. Table numbers and menu cards were by Mama Inc. Studio in the Wirral.

Adding to the fun and relaxed nature of our shoot, Sam and Erika, the team behind UNVEILED Network Member Tweedle Floral Design made the dreamiest bouquets. They design foam free florals, showcasing a wild natural charm and helping contribute our part to protect the planet at the same time. Their imagination had no limits in creating us an aesthetic which would complement each look. By incorporating wild, playful colour for one followed by natural muted tones for the next, the florals really enhanced each look.

And of course it was all captured perfectly by UNVEILED Network Member Veil & Gun, who are based in Barnard Castle. Made up of two Northerners, Loren & Millie, Veil & Gun are all about hopeless romance, rock and roll style, gritty adventures and celebrating humans in all their glory, making everyone look incredible.

ATTIRE

Of course our favourite part of any shoot is the dresses – and we’re always spoilt for choice! For our first look, we really wanted to focus on the soft, dreamy fabrics against the harsh industrial textures so we turned to some incredibly beautiful Enzoani dresses to create this contrast. We teamed a timeless, traditional feel dress with model Megan who has a really cool look. Her tattoos, a painted leather jacket from Bird & Bone Designs and the surrounding industrial vibes made for breathtaking images.

Staying with Enzoani, model Claire wore a romantic, shimmering princess gown teamed with a pair of roller skates and it was without a doubt the most mesmerizing pairing we never knew we needed. Lunella by Willowby by Watters has such amazing detail and this was captured beautifully by photographers Veil & Gun. We particularly love the way the sleeves on this dress don’t serve to cover up but rather enhance. Bonnie, another Willowby dress, felt almost iconic, hitched up revealing bare feet in front of the macrame backdrop – we were in love!

We like to think that our boutique is your home from home – giving you a relaxed and unforgettable experience from the moment you walk in. You and your bridal party can expect a completely private bridal appointment with exclusive use of the boutique. Let your girls get comfortable surrounded by exposed brickwork and crystal chandeliers while we dive into rails of gorgeous gowns to find your dream dress.

BEAUTY

Due to Covid-19, our talented makeup artists were unable to create their makeup looks themselves. Instead, they provided models with guidance which resulted in beautiful, subtle makeup which felt incredibly romantic and natural. We wanted really soft, relaxed styling for hair and both Mazz and Nicky worked with each of our models to carefully create a look which achieved this.

UNVEILED Network Member Nicola Whitfield is an internationally published, cruelty free hair and makeup artist based in Yorkshire. She specialises in creating soft, romantic hairstyles and classic traditional or flawless airbrush makeup, just perfect for brides. Makeup for your wedding day is completely different to everyday makeup. It should perform at its best in all different types of lighting and weather conditions. She’s known for her relaxed, calming manner on busy wedding days and for going above and beyond for her lovely brides.

Mazz Loxton, based in Sheffield is a hair and makeup artist, using exclusively cruelty free products. Creating timeless hair and makeup styles to enhance natural features, complement personalities, and help brides feel gorgeous on their wedding day, working across Sheffield, the Peak District, and often up to Leeds.

RESULTS

We were incredibly excited to work with such amazing local suppliers, enabling each to showcase exactly what they do best. Having met Loren and Millie (the duo behind Veil & Gun) on the day of the shoot, we knew immediately that we had a shared vision and they understood the vibe we were hoping to capture. Their easy-going style put our models at ease and their unbelievable eye for detail has left us with a bunch of badass images which are just pure magic. Alongside this, Zuzi from Stella Photography headed up videography and her laid back approach was an absolute dream.

There are infinite real weddings you can find online for inspiration but it’s easy to fall into the trap of tradition, thinking you have to do things a certain way. We wanted to represent the fun, the wild and the things that make you unique! We celebrate the changes which are happening increasingly in this industry, seeing more brides embracing their creativity and hope that we’ve shown you don’t need to be afraid to redefine bridal with us.

We are BEYOND excited to announce that we will be launching our new sister brand, Electric Bride, this winter. Allowing us to help more brides find their dream dress, Electric Bride will complement Elizabeth Kate Bridal by offering a different range of gowns while still maintaining our relaxed vibe and ‘hell yeah’ attitude. We cannot wait to celebrate your electric love in our no-judgement boutique!
