Bejewelled Beauty. A Modern Period Wedding Styled Shoot at Flixton House

Alexis Forsyth

With period styling very much of the moment (thanks to a certain Netflix series – yes, we’re looking at you Bridgerton!) this beautiful creative shoot couldn’t have come along at a better time!

Featuring a mesmerising jewel-coloured palette with pops of teal, this is a bold, distinctive look perfect for couples uninspired by traditional pastel hues, and keen to pick something for their big day that’ll make for memorable wedding day photos with a bit of pizazz.

The shoot’s location, Flixton House in Trafford, is a Grade II building dating back to the 1800s, and its exquisite period charm works effortlessly with the theme. Styling touches such as the paper bouquet and buttonholes, flickering candles, and shimmering tableware really make a statement and beautifully contrast with the regal setting.

Want to know more? Here’s bridal hair and make up artist Laura Kilfoyle to tell us all the dreamy details about what inspired the shoot and how all the fabulous decor, styling, attire and beauty elements were brought to life by an all-female collective of talented northern suppliers.

Inspiration

Laura says: I knew that I wanted to do a shoot with a jewel-coloured theme like emerald, sapphire and gold with hints of teal. I also wanted to work with a team of North West-based suppliers. The styles we had in mind very much hinted at period styling whilst maintaining a more modern feel. I think the shoot shows that you can have a classic wedding with a timeless yet modern twist.

Our celebrant, Hazel Walsh of Sunkissed Ceremonies, married the couple using a traditional ceremony, with them literally tying the knot!

One of the best things about this shoot is the all-female suppliers we had on board. It was really special having so many wonderful suppliers involved to create our combined vision.

Location

We chose Flixton House as, although it’s located within an urban area, the grounds are stunning and vast, complete with beautiful gardens. We made sure that plenty of shots were taken outside and we were spoilt for choice with backdrops!

The two ceremony rooms were quite different which allowed the stylist to really play around and create two looks while maintaining the overall theme. The main room had a beautiful wooden backdrop which provided an intimate, elegant and period style, whilst the second room was much more open and spacious with tons of natural sunlight.

Styling

We used a lovely mix of décor. The bouquet and buttonholes were made entirely of paper by the talented Katrina from Paper Seed Floristry. We had some incredible settings, styled with candles and an abundance of flowers, supplied by the lovely Onyx Weddings and Events. The cake was designed by UNVEILED Network Member Elizabeth Anna Cake Design especially to highlight our colour scheme, along with an autumnal theme, and was inspired by the baroque period, and we had a gorgeous cake stand provided by Wild Peak Events. We also featured stationery from The Little Paper Loft to complement our theme.

Attire

The dress we chose was Chenille by Jennifer Wren. We chose this elegant, mermaid gown with an illusion lace neckline from Cherish Bridal. The groom wore a blue three-piece suit from Groom Hire in Liverpool. We picked this suit to fit in with the colour scheme and really make Joe, the groom, stand out.

Beauty

I wanted to keep the hair and makeup demure and subtle with a focus on glowing skin. The model had beautiful skin and so I wanted to accentuate this. Knowing that we had beautiful headpieces from Rachel Chaprunne to use for the day, I didn’t want the bride’s look to be too ‘busy’. The overall look was classy and elegant whilst still retaining a modern twist with a bold coloured lip.

Results

The day itself was busy and bustling but so organised. Everyone knew what needed to be done and it went really smoothly. A particular highlight for me was that we captured so many lovely moments between our two models who are a real-life couple. Their natural affection for each other really shone through in Kamila’s photos, and also the videography captured by Kathryn Berry Films, which is why I love using real couples in creative shoots!
